Merlot Confidential: 2010 Merliance Release Party

Merliance, the alliance of Long Island producers of quality merlot and merlot-based blends, invites you to join its member-winemakers for a top-secret tasting of the signature wines of the region. Merliance is releasing its 2010 Merliance—the group’s eponymous merlot blend and the only cooperative wine made on Long Island—and offering a vertical tasting of Merliance, some vintages of which are now quite rare. We’ll also be tasting our members’ not-yet-released merlots and merlot-based blends from the landmark 2010 and 2012 vintages—the latter from barrel. Be among the first to taste these extraordinary wines, some released at this special event, some offered years before their release! A selection of hors d’oeuvres will be served, courtesy of Raphael.

Raphael Announces New Winemaker Anthony Nappa

With the release of winemaker Leslie Howard, Raphael is proud to introduce our new winemaker Anthony Nappa to our team. Anthony studied botany at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and completed a degree in ‘Fruit and Vegetable Agriculture’ from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture. In New Zealand, Anthony received formal training in winemaking from Lincoln University in Christchurch. He has also worked as a winemaker in Southern Italy, California, and Massachusetts. With his extensive experience both abroad and in the states, the Raphael family is excited to have Anthony’s unique take on Long Island winemaking. Anthony has called the North Fork of Long Island his home since 2007 and speaks openly about his style, “Long Island has a unique maritime climate and good soils for producing distinctive wines. I make wines with minimal additives and manipulation, unadulterated and straightforward to allow the wines to shine their best on their own. I’m very happy to have joined the Raphael family and looking forward to what we will create together.” General Manager Joseph Vergari states “Anthony brings a broad knowledge of the wine business and industry, as well as, a great work ethic and an intense knowledge of winemaking. His skills will help my team bring Raphael to a new level within the industry.” Raphael continues to be an industry leader moving forward year by year.
